      Abstract

      In recent months, a series of investment firms, notably AC Inversions and Grupo Arcano S.A., have been accused of using a scheme known as a “pyramid scheme” to defraud thousands of people out of amounts close to US$200 million. What are pyramid schemes? Are they exceptional or recurring cases? Why do people fall for these schemes? Can they be prevented from continuing to occur?
