Exactly one year ago, the Paris Agreement was signed, in which a consensus was reached to limit the rise in global temperature to less than 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. In total, 186 countries responsible for 96% of global emissions submitted greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets. Today, 117 of them have ratified the agreement (accounting for 66% of global emissions). The rest have until April 2017 to do so. The United States, one of the leading CO2 emitters, sought under the Obama administration to position itself as a leader in the fight against climate change, an objective now in doubt with Donald Trump's rise to power.
