Public works concessions have given Chile an air of a developed country, have reduced transportation costs, and have also indirectly helped lift many Chileans out of poverty. This led to the extension of this model of public-private partnerships to other sectors, such as prisons and hospitals. Extending concessions to these public services entails a greater degree of complexity, and the advantages (and disadvantages) of allowing the private sector to participate in such services differ from those in public works.
