      Abstract

      Since the end of last year, the slowdown of the economy has been a recurring topic of discussion. A key indicator that raises concern is the unemployment rate, which rose by almost one percentage point over the past twelve months, reaching 6.7% in the latest measurement by the INE (National Statistics Institute) for the August–October moving quarter. The level of economic activity, measured by the Imacec (monthly index of economic activity), also shows an abrupt stagnation since late 2012 and very moderate growth rates during the second half of 2013 and the months of 2014 to date.
