      Abstract

      As a result of global transparency rankings, in recent years Chile has been perceived within the region as one of the countries with the lowest levels of corruption. Some recent cases, together with public suspicion that the problem is more widespread than it appears, may lead us to revise this notion of so unblemished a Chile. Moreover, there is a risk—one highlighted by numerous international media outlets—that these scandals, while at the same time an opportunity, may damage the image of the country's institutional framework if they are poorly handled.
