The Time for Postnatal Leave

Abstract

The NGO Save the Children has recently published its index of the best countries in which to “be a mother.” Chile ranks 13th within the group of developing countries. Curiously, Chile's position in the ranking is not driven by maternal or child health indicators (on which Chile performs very well), but by three indicators: expected years of formal education for women, the gender wage gap, and the share of seats held by women in Congress.
