The Cost of Delayed Investment in Electricity Generation

Chile's energy problem is today a political issue. It is not technical reasons that have prevented the normal development of investment in the sector. The country and its leaders must therefore take a clear stance on the electricity question, since delays in carrying out projects have had a negative impact on growth, private investment, and employment, and will have even worse effects toward the end of the present decade. This is compounded by the possibility that such delays, arising from the growing judicialization and politicization of project approval processes, could even imply, in the medium term, that installed capacity will be insufficient to meet demand.
