Chile needs, and has undertaken, major investments in public infrastructure—highways, ports, and airports, for example—in order to increase its competitiveness. It has thereby
reduced transport costs and increased the volume of exports at lower prices. Investments have also been carried out alongside other important reforms, such as the construction of buildings for the criminal procedure reform, public hospitals and prisons, streets and bus stops for Transantiago (Santiago's public transit system), bridges, and infrastructure in general to “compensate” the regions, among many other investments over the past 15 years.
